Three modes, and a garden that fills up

Three ways to play

One app, three puzzles, one garden.

Each mode has its own daily and its own packs. Play one and ignore the rest, or work through all three.

Sixteen words, four groups

Groups

Sixteen words, four groups of four. The craft is in the traps: some words plausibly fit two or three groups.

LIME is a citrus and a colour. The craft of a Groups puzzle is in the words that plausibly fit two answers at once.

Six tries at a hidden word

Guess

Six tries at a hidden word of five, six or seven letters. One shared puzzle a day, plus unlimited practice.

Five, six or seven letters, and the board size is yours to pick. Every tile carries a mark as well as a colour, so the board still reads without them.

Guess follows a long line of word-guessing games: Lingo, Mastermind and Jotto. We credit Josh Wardle, whose version brought the idea to millions.

How much there is

Thousands of puzzles, and not one timer.

Packs keep arriving, the dictionary ships inside the app, and none of it is rationed out to you.

5,000+ puzzles to play ten to a pack, across all three modes
500+ packs a new set arrives every month
1,800+ letter boards Classic, Large and Giant
171,755 words in the dictionary the whole ENABLE list, bundled and offline
3 ways to play Groups, Search and Guess
0 timers, lives and energy nothing to run out of

Search runs on three boards. A Giant holds more than twice the letters of a Classic.

What it will never do

Nothing here is taken from you.

Most word games in this category are built to interrupt you. This one is built the other way round, and that is the whole point of it.

  • No timer, on any puzzle
  • No lives, no energy, nothing to refill
  • No streak to lose by missing a day
  • No puzzle interrupted, ever
  • No sign-up before you can play

Leave a puzzle half-finished and it is exactly where you left it, tomorrow or next month.

The garden

Finish a pack, grow a plant.

Packs are grouped into groves. Finishing one grows a plant that stays, with the date you earned it.

Nothing wilts, nothing expires, and nothing asks you to come back and water it. A plant you grew on your first day is still there years later, with the date you earned it.

Two shelves of potted plants in a sunlit window, with a cat asleep on the sill

All six grown. A new grove opens next month.

Plays with no wifi

Packs download once and then stay yours. Reconnecting refills them, free and by itself.

No ad is ever required to refill a pack. Reconnecting does it, free and by itself.

A daily, and every daily before it

An archive of previous daily puzzles, with what you solved, missed and failed.

The daily board sorts everyone who solved into bands by how it went, rather than ranking places, so a slow solve is still a solve.

Questions

Before you install it.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes, once it has downloaded a pack. The first launch needs a connection to fetch puzzles; after that everything you have downloaded plays offline, and reconnecting refills the pack automatically and free.

Do I need an account?

No. An account exists only so your progress survives a reinstall or follows you to a new device. Your email address is never shown to other players.

Are there energy bars, lives or timers?

None of them. There is nothing to run out of and nothing to wait for, and no ad is ever required in order to play.

How does the leaderboard work?

The daily board groups everyone who solved into bands by how it went, rather than ranking places. The weekly board adds up daily points with a cap per day, so playing well matters more than playing often. While the boards are filling up they also include the app's own solvers, which the app tells you inside the leaderboard.

Where do the puzzles come from?

They are written for this app and checked before they are published. The dictionary that validates a word is the public-domain ENABLE word list. No puzzle content is taken from anyone else.

Word Puzzles is almost here.

No timers, no lives, no interruptions.
